Rishi fights to save Andheri mangroves
Environmentalist Rishi Aggrawal has gone out of the way to make things easier for the next generation.

Mumbai: Recent calamities have highlighted the importance of mangroves in our eco-system.

But there are very few people who understand the significance of preserving them as lush green mangroves in Andheri has turned into a dumping place.

Moreover, sorrow of losing livelihood is surrounding the Adivasis dependent on the 200 odd acres of mangroves in Andheri, which are slowly fading away.

Adivasi Ganesh Gawari said, "The buildings have started coming up now, roads are being built and the mangroves are dying and so is my livelihood from catching crabs in these mangroves".

But there are few people who are not only aware of the ill effects of the dying mangroves but also taken up the challenge to protect the habitat.

Economist turned Environmentalist Rishi Aggrawal is such a person, who has taken it on himself to wage this war to make things easier for the next generation.

Pointing out the pathetic condition of the mangroves, Rishi Aggrawal said, "Look at the debris, thermocol and stuff that have been dumped here! How can someone do this, considering this is the only breather that this large city has?"

Each day for Rishi in this mission is an uphill task. But one consolation that he draws happiness from is the young minds that he's managed to ignite.

Student Amit Thacker said, "Since I have started work with Rishi sir, things have changed for me and though a little environmentally inclined, now I am a die-hard Convert".

Another student Supriya Popli opined, "This is an eco system that we need to protect as it acts as a natural buffer. Even when the tsunami occurred, many parts of our country were protected by mangroves".

Sumit Jalan, student said, "Mangroves are victims of prejudice, people really do not understand the importance and even if they do, they ignore it".

Voices of the students provide solace and a stronger resolve to fight even harder, a personal commitment to a cause that would benefit the masses.

Each day Rishi Aggrawal hopes and prays that the world become a better place for the next generation.
