TIRUCHY: About 40 kg of gold jewels and bars worth about Rs 10 crore has been robbed from a leading jewellery shop here. The robbery came to light when one of the owners came to open the shop on Saturday morning. The incident, which occurred on NSB Road, a busiest commercial hub in the Rock City, has sent shock waves among traders and general public in the city, as the jewellery, functioning for the last five decades, is situated next to the police watch post, where a revolving monitoring camera had been fixed. It is not known whether the camera had recorded anything pertaining to the robbery. Bharasmal, one of the partners of the shop, ‘Amar Jewellers’, was shocked to notice the replacement of two locks in one of the three shutters, when he came to open the shop on Saturday. There are three shutters for the shop and a total of six locks, two each for one shutter. But, the owners found that two of the six locks had been replaced with new ones. Immediately, he informed the Fort station police, who rushed to the spot. When the shop was opened by the police in the presence of Bharasmal, all the things inside were found scattered. While, many jewels in the shelves remained untouched, a bag stuffed with jewels was also found in a corner. It was found that several gold bars and jewels were missing. A police team headed by City Commissioner of Police (incharge) KC Mahali also rushed to the spot. All the other partners of the shop Bananlal, Devaraj, Dhansiyan and Naveensan were summoned to the shop. In their presence, police took an estimation of the missing jewellery and gold bars. It was found that about 40 kg of gold jewels, gold bars and `three lakh in cash had been stolen. The total worth is estimated at Rs 10 crore. Forensic experts, who reached the spot, lifted fingerprints found on the new locks and at several places inside the shop. The sniffer dog, ‘Jack’, which was brought to the place, went to a nearby supermarket and then to the godown of a vessels shop nearby.
