CHJENNAI: A former Aavin employee, who was fired from his job for allegedly misappropriating funds, set himself ablaze at the State-run milk cooperative’s zonal office in Ashok Nagar on Tuesday. Admitted to the Kilpauk Medical College hospital with nearly 100 per cent burns, he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.Sourced told Express that charges of misappropriating funds had been brought against C Rajan (55), a senior marketing assistant, twice when he was posted at the dairy’s depot in Ashok Nagar. “He swindled funds to the tune of Rs 55,000 given to him by delivery boys for renewal of customers’ milk cards. “He also failed to deposit Rs 2,500 collected from retail sale at the depot with the cashier.” Pending an inquiry, Rajan was suspended and later reinstated at a depot in Thyagaraya Nagar. He started missing work regularly and was transferred to the Ambattur dairy, they said. “When the charges against him were proved during the probe, he was terminated from service in March last,” the sources claimed.Unemployed, his family soon fell into hard times, investigating officer Dhanasekaran told Express. He had a 20-year-old daughter, who had failed the Class X exams and a son (19) who had just finished Class 12. He was unable to pay the college fee. Rajan, a resident of Karambakkam in Porur told his wife on Tuesday that he would visit his old bosses to plead his case. Around 2 pm, he went to the Aavin zonal office in the Udhayam Complex in Ashok Nagar, where he met the deputy manager and demanded his reinstatement. Shown the door, he doused himself in kerosene on the verandah and struck the matchstick, the officer said. The Kumaran Nagar police have registered a case of suspicious death.
