BANGALORE: His job was to play devotional songs during mahamangalarati at Kukke Subrahmanya temple. However, the nadaswaram artiste, who had a weakness for the bottle, let his spirits take over and instead played Yesudas' haunting number from the 70s hit Chit Chor, Gori Tera Gaon Bada Pyara..., promptly earning the wrath of his employer, the Muzrai Department. This even cost S K Venugopal, the artiste, his job and on Wednesday, the High Court dismissed his writ appeal challenging a single judge's order upholding the Muzrai Department's order to terminate his services.
However, as Venugopal pleaded for mercy, the High Court asked the Department to explore the possibility of reemploying Venugopal. A division bench consisting of Chief Justice J S Kehar and Justice H G Ramesh asked the department if it was willing to provide fresh employment to Venugopal as he had undergone treatment for deaddiction to kick his habit and consider the fact that he had not succumbed to his weakness for the past two years. The bench adjourned the case to June 29 and directed Venugopal to file an affidavit stating that the department can dismiss him from service if his conduct was not good.

Venugopal submitted before the court that he does not know any other work or have any other means of subsistence as he had grown up playing nadaswaram. He has undergone treatment in Manipal Hospital at a cost of `12,000 to kick his drinking habit, he pleaded.
