Lucknow: Jailed underworld don Abu Salem is aspiring to enter politics and wants to make debut from the Hindi heartland by contesting the Azamgarh assembly constituency in the forthcoming UP assembly polls.
Salem's lawyer on Monday said that Salem was keen on contesting from Azamgarh as it happens to be his hometown and that if the court permits him, he could even go out to campaign for himself.
"If there are legal technicalities to be done than we will approach the court and we will also request the court to grant permission to allow him to campaign for himself in his constituency," said Harjit Singh, advocate of Abu Salem.
His lawyer has already filed an appeal in the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court seeking permission to contest and campaign in the forthcoming Assembly polls.
News of Salem's interest to contest from Azamgarh have already enthused his relatives and some local residents of the area.
"That is Abu Salem's ancestral village and Abu Salem showed interest in contesting for the elections, the people of the village will surely support him," said Rashid Ansari, Salem's cousin.
Salem's new move, if turns successful, would add a new chapter to the story of a small-time cloth merchant turned dreaded Mumbai's don saga.
