COIMBATORE: Former Anna University Vice Chancellor D Viswanathan is the second academician, who has held the high office, to face a raid by the officers of the DVAC in the State. His former private secretary and suspended Anna University of Technology (Coimbatore) V-C R Radhakrishan was the first head of a university whose house was raided by DVAC officers three years ago. However, till date there has been no progress in the case registered against him for allegedly amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. Viswanathan, who had demitted office four years ago, is suspected to have colluded with M Najimudeen of Barnas International, a company dealing with high-end surveillance cameras, to purchase equipment for the university subverting the TN Transparency in Tenders Rules. Najimudeen had shot into fame due to his close association with former Governor Surjit Singh Barnala’s son Jasjit Singh Barnala, who has financial stakes in Barnas International. The raids at Viswanathan’s house came as a bit of surprise considering that he had joined the AIADMK on the eve of the Assembly polls. Even now he had claimed to some of his acquaintances that he would be rewarded with a MP ticket soon. “This shows that the Jayalalithaa Government was acting in a non-partisan manner and that the police had a free hand to deal with corruption,” a professor said.
