CHENNAI: The Naam Tamilar party has thanked Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for passing the resolution in the Assembly calling for economic sanctions against Sri Lanka. The party has also welcomed the government’s announcements that steps would be taken to improve the conditions of Sri Lankan refugees in the state.“It is a watershed resolution that has been passed in the Assembly. It is very significant that the Chief Minister herself moved the resolution. No leader had passed such a resolution before for fear of political backlash. It will be a shot in arm for the supporters of Tamil Eelam,” said Naam Tamilar party chief Seeman, at a press conference on Sunday. The party has announced that it would hold a public meeting at the Theradi Veedhi in Saidapet on June 18 to thank the government for adopting the resolution. Also in attendance at the press conference were actor-director Manivannan, a noted supporter, and actor Sathyaraj. Manivannan underscored the need to follow up on the good start of the resolution. “We welcome the resolution. It is a watershed. But we also have to remember this alone is not going to help improve conditions for our Tamil brethren. It is but a step, and more action is needed,” he pointed out.Seeman welcomed the government’s announcement that it would take steps to improve conditions for Eelam Tamil refugees living in camps in the State. “We welcome this move. We will visit the camps and submit our own report to the government,” said Seeman.Fielding questions on recent allegations made against him by a small-time actress, Seeman said it was clear that a party for whose defeat in the poll he had campaigned had pushed the actress to file such a complaint, alluding to the DMK-Congress combine.
