New Delhi: A group of Sikh organizations have asked the Centre and the governments of Punjab and Haryana to arrest Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by June 18, failing which their activists would court arrest in front of the Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh on June 19.
“We want that the Centre, Punjab and Haryana governments arrest the Dera Chief by June 18 for hurting Sikh sentiments by his act. If they fail to arrest him, then we would court arrest in Chandigarh on June 19," Gurmat Sidhant Parcharak Sant Samaj Chief, Bhai Harnam Singh was quoted by PTI.
This decision was taken after a marathon meeting held in Ludhiana which was attended by about 35 leaders representing Sikh organisations.
The Dera chief had apologised last week for newspaper ads showing Baba Gurmeet Ram Raheem Singh dressed as Gobind Singh. (The ad led to sectarian clashes across Punjab and parts of North India.) However the Akal Takht said the apology is a "shrewd tactic to divert attention."
The sikh clergy demanded that the government disband Dera camps in Punjab and Haryana and arrest Gurmeet.
Dera sect, which has thousands of followers, says it is a social organization that believes in the oneness of god and does not adhere to a particular faith, though its leader wears a turban and has a long beard in the Sikh style.
