CHENNAI: The city police on Friday arrested six persons for cheating a software engineer by selling fake gold bars at Selaiyur.

CHENNAI: The city police on Friday arrested six persons for cheating a software engineer by selling fake gold bars at Selaiyur.Police said Jeyachandran had allegedly asked his friend Sunil to suggest a jeweller to buy gold jewellery for his sister’s wedding.Sunil told him that his friends, who were in the customs, could get him gold bars at a discount rate and introduced Jeyachandran to his friends Bhoopathy and Murali, police said.On February 7, the two had sold two bars claiming them to be gold for a price of Rs 4.5 lakh. Two days later, Jeyachandran checked the bars in a nearby gold jewellery shop after becoming suspicious and found them to be brass bars coated with gold. Police sources said that the two persons along with their friends decided to cheat the engineer and got the brass bars made through a goldsmith from Tondiarpet telling him that it was for a display in an exhibition.The engineer lodged a complaint with the police, who arrested six persons-- Mural i , Bhoopathy, James, Alikoor Jamal, Gopi and Sundar. Police also recovered Rs 3 lakh and a fake gold bar.Man Held Cheating former Neighbour Sleuths of the CCB arrested a man who allegedly made his former neighbour invest in business and then cheated him of Rs 45 lakh at Avadi, on Friday.Police said they arrested Haribabu (41), who had allegedly told his neighbour Vinoth Sharma that they could purchase and run a software developing company and had taken Rs 7 lakh from him in the year 2005. An office was set up in Alwarthirunagar when the complainant had again made an investment of `18 lakh to expand the new venture, police said.After a few months, when the complainant Vinoth questioned why there was no profit on the business, Haribabu convinced him that the company had struck a deal with a UK-based phone company and took another Rs 20 lakh from him, police sources said.Later, Hari babu changed the name of the company and shifted its office to Choolaimedu. In 2007, when the complainant came to Choolaimedu, he found that the company had no office. Following that, Vinoth asked Haribabu to return his money. Haribabu then moved from Avadi to Thiruvanmiyur, police said. Based on a complaint from Vinoth, police registered a case on January 31, 2011. Haribabu was arrested on Friday and remanded.Kills Uncle, Ends Life A 25-year-old man, who consumed acid after murdering his septuagenarian uncle during a tiff died in a private hospital on Saturday.Police said Elumalai was allegedly stabbed while his wife Govindammal was injured by Mahadeven, the son of Govindammal’s brother Ponnusamy on Friday night.Police said that the old man was stabbed following a verbal altercation over a property. Elumalai died on the spot. Mahadevan, who drank acid after the murder, was admitted to a private hospital where he died on Saturday.Customs Seizes Undeclared Gold Two men, Subramani and Kumar who travelled on the same flight from Colombo were pulled up by Customs officers at the Airport for trying to slip past without declaring gold. Subramani attempted to slip concealed jewels and was caught. The gold was valued at Rs 8 lakh and he was arrest. Kumar tried to slip 120 gms of 24 carat gold undeclared. He was caught, but as it was valued at Rs 4 lakh, he was let off with a fine.
