New Delhi: Exactly a week after winning eight Oscars, the team of Slumdog Millionaire has got mired in a new controversy.
According to reports, one of the child leads in the film, 10-year-old Azharuddin Ismail, will get less than £20,000 from the producers of the film which grossed over £123 million at the box office.
This has left his 45-year-old father, Mohammed Ismail complaining. Ismail makes a living by selling 'scrap' and feels that the money given to his son isn't 'enough'.
His father, who is a Tuberculosis patient, has now has demanded more cash from the producers.
"My son has taken on the world and won. I am so proud of him but I want more money. They promised me a new house but it hasn't happened. I'm still in the slum."
"I want the money now, it is of no use later. Boyle should take care of my son," said Ismail, who was criticised on Sunday for slapping the child for not granting interview to some foreign journalists.
Azharuddin played the young Salim, the brother of lead protagonist Jamal in the film. He has just returned to his shanty home on Thursday after a dream visit to Oscar awards and Disneyland.
The children shot to international fame post the success of the film, which depicts the story of a slum dweller winning against all odds.
The producers have set up a trust fund for the children which they will access once they turn 18. They attend an English language school for impoverished children and get a monthly stipend as well.
The producers have also promised to buy a home to the families after facing allegations that the children were not paid well for working in the film.
