The Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital (KKCTH) and the CHILDS Trust Medical Research Foundation held their 13th Millennium Oration 2012 during the inauguration of the Continuous Medical Education (CME) session on Pediatric Tuberculosis here on Sunday. S Mahadevan, professor of pediatrics, JIPMER, Puducherry, delivered an oration on ‘Tuberculosis in childhood — Path Travelled’.
Mahadevan highlighted the occurrence of tuberculosis in children and the problems faced by the doctors in trying to eradicate strains of drug-resistant tuberculosis bacteria. “Tuberculosis in childhood poses specific challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Unlike adult tuberculosis which is relatively easier to diagnose, pediatric tuberculosis is often over-diagnosed or at times not recognised at all,” he said.
He added that the difficulties were due to non-specific symptoms that are present in children and the problem of confirming diagnosis with cultures of TB bacteria.
C V Krishnaswami, chairman of TAG-VHS Diabetes Research Centre who was the chief guest at the oration said that in order to tackle the problem of tuberculosis, new vistas in the research arena were needed and that the fraternity had to head in a completely new direction altogether. “CME sessions like these are very important,” he said.
K Mathangi Ramakrishnan, chairperson of The CHILDS Trust Medical Research Foundation, A Andal, medical director of KKCTH and Bala Ramachandran, assistant medical director at KKCTH were also present.
