New Delhi: On the day that a man was arrested for carrying a pistol to a rally of Congress President Sonia Gandhi in Almora in Uttarakhand, the spirits of the leader remained undaunted.

While pointing out that the UPA Government was committed to ensuring the state's peace, political stability and prosperity, Sonia on Sunday asked the electorate in Uttarakhand to vote for the Congress.

Sonia made the statement at a rally that was organised to strengthen party's position in the state. The rally — held in Dehradun — marked the last leg of the campaign in Uttrakhand, where elections are due to be held on February 21.

"The life of common man has many difficulties. The UPA government at the Centre is fighting to alleviate these difficulties. Just three days ago, prices of petrol and diesel were reduced," PTI quoted Sonia as saying.

In a bid to counter Sonia's influence in the state capital, the BJP pitted Bollywood star and MP Hema Malini against her. Hema also addressed a rally in Dehradun on Sunday.

During the rally, Sonia blamed the BJP for not naming the state aptly. "The previous government not only disappointed you on the issue of the state's name but also did nothing for development and progress," PTI quoted Sonia as saying.

"We are proud and happy that we gave the reigns of the state to a freedom fighter like N D Tiwari who laid a solid foundation for the development of the state," she added.
