Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal on Monday directed the state government to conduct a probe into allegations about the casual manner in which mandatory environmental clearance is being sought for sand mining in rivers by government agencies.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Congress member Navprabhat said though small mining leases have been distributed to private bidders, government institutions like Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam are waiting for mining leases due to the casual manner in which they are seeking mandatory enviromental clearance.
He said this is causing huge loss to the exchequer. Noting this is a serious issue, Kunjwal asked the state government to institute an inquiry into the allegations. The Speaker also asked the state government to remove the Managing Director of Uttarakhand Van Vikas Nigam and institute an inquiry within three weeks into charges about purchase of private land at exorbitant rates despite availability of cheap government land for a proposed Timber Depot of the corporation.
The Speaker's ruling came on an allegation levelled by Congress MLA and former chairman of the Nigam Pranav Singh Champion.
