KOCHI: The city police on Sunday arrested a Sri Lankan agent who used to transport Lankan refugees to Australia by sea. The accused S Senthiran alias Murughan, 38, of Kandy district, Sri Lanka, was arrested by a team led by Palarivattom sub-inspector P S Shiju from ChengalTapet in Tamil Nadu. Senthiran is the first accused in a case in which 16 Sri Lankans were taken into custody for attempting to migrate illegally to Australia in June last year. A police official in the team which arrested Senthiran told Express that he was taken into custody from the police cell in Chegalpet. He has been engaged in illegal activities for the past several years. Senthiran came to Kerala with many of the Sri Lankans who had migrated to India during the war between the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE. Senthiran used to take money from the refugees and transport them to other countries in fishing boats. Senthiran was presented before the Ernakulam First Class Judicial Magistrate and was remanded in judicial custody. The city police team had detained 16 Sri Lankans for attempting to illegally migrate to Australia in a fishing boat ‘Sea Queen’ which was berthed at Murukumpadam in Njarakkal.
