One of the traditional classical instruments popular in South India is the Nadaswaram. This double-reed wind instrument is integral to traditional music in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka. Renowned for its powerful sound, it is considered one of the world’s loudest non-brass acoustic instruments. Often confused with the North Indian Shehnai, the Nadaswaram differs in size and construction.
Learning to play the Nadaswaram is a challenging endeavour, but in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam, one man is offering free lessons. Rama Rao, hailing from Amadalavalasa in Srikakulam district, has mastered the Nadaswaram, becoming an experienced player and scholar featured on the Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel Tirumala Tirupati Devastanams (SVBC TTD), a 24-hour Telugu devotional channel. Rao, having participated in numerous concerts, is now dedicated to imparting his knowledge, teaching Nadaswaram Vidya to around 30 students from various parts of the Srikakulam district. He provides accommodation for these students on the premises of Sri Sangameswara Swamy Temple near Amadalavalasa.
The Nadaswaram holds significant cultural and religious importance, often featured in temple weddings, religious ceremonies, and social functions. It is a staple in classical music concerts, belonging to the auspicious Mangala vadyam family. Typically played in pairs, it is accompanied by the Thavil, a pair of drums.
The Nadaswaram, also known as Elil, features seven finger holes and is predominantly made from the Aacha tree. However, modern versions are crafted from bamboo, sandalwood, copper, brass, ebony, and ivory. Its resonant tones are cherished among the Tamil Nadu diaspora, symbolizing cultural heritage and tradition.
Rama Rao’s dedication to preserving and sharing the art of Nadaswaram reflects a commitment to cultural preservation and community enrichment. Through his efforts, the timeless melodies of this revered instrument continue to resonate, enriching lives and connecting generations with the rich musical heritage of South India.
