The probe into alleged lapses of food safety standards has been expanded to test Maggi noodle samples from across the country following detection of mono-sodium glutamate and lead in excess of the prescribed limit in the noodles.
Here is the action that has been taken so far in various states.
Delhi: The Delhi government on Wednesday banned the sale of Maggi noodles for 15 days in the national capital and asked the company to withdraw all the stock within 15 days. Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said that Nestle India has been asked to withdraw Maggi for the time being and a fresh stock of noodles will be tested after which a decision will be taken.
Bihar: A district court in Bihar directed the police to register an FIR against two Nestle officials and film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Priyanka Chopra, who have featured in the Maggi advertisements and arrest them if required.
Maharashtra: The government says there have been no negative reports about the samples tested so far. "We have taken some samples but we have not found any negative reports. I am in constant touch with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Harshadeep Kamble on the issue," Food and Civil Supplies minister Girish Bapat said.
Karnataka: The government ordered random lifting of samples of Maggi noodles from across the state for laboratory testing after allegations of lapses in food safety standards came to the fore. The collected samples will be sent to national-level laboratory units situated in Mysuru and another private laboratory in Bengaluru.
Telangana: Samples of Maggi instant noodles are being tested in Telangana. "We have taken 22 samples from our state. We have sent them for screening. Actual reporting time is two weeks maximum," K Amarender Reddy, Director of Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM), Telangana said.
Punjab: Punjab also ordered testing of Maggi noodles samples. "We have taken almost 60 samples of Maggi noodles collected from various parts of the state for laboratory testing," Punjab Heath and Family Welfare Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani said. He said that the samples have been sent for testing in a government laboratory in Amritsar. "We will soon receive the report of the samples," the minister said.
Tamil Nadu: The state government has sent Nestle's noodle brand Maggi to the labs to check for levels of monosodium glutamate (MSG) and lead. The Food Safety Department of Tamil Nadu has initiated proceedings in this regard, collecting samples and sending them to laboratories across the state to be examined.
Gujarat: Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration collected 39 samples of Maggi noodles and sent them for laboratory testing. "We are expecting the results by the end of this week and after that we will decide further course of action," Commissioner of Food and Drug Control, H G Koshia said.
Kerala: The state government has decided to temporarily stop distribution of Maggi noodles from over 1,000 retail outlets following the Uttar Pradesh FSDA finding monosodium glutamate and lead in excess of prescribed limit in the snack. At least 20,000 bakeries in the state have also decided not to sell any brand of noodles. Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation, also known as Supplyco, has around 1,400 outlets throughout the state.
West Bengal: The controversy relating to Maggi instant noodles found mention in the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday. The West Bengal government said that samples of popular snacks 'Kurkure' and 'Lays' are also being sent for testing.
Puducherry: State government also sent said samples have been sent for lab tests and follow up action would be taken, based on the results.
Arunachal: The FSO officers in Arunachal Pradesh lifted random samples of Maggi noodles from various places of the state and dispatched them to a laboratory in Guwahati for analysis. The FSOs have been directed to lift more samples of various noodles brand for routine check of quality standards.
Uttarakhand: Banning Maggi, the state government said that the decision was taken in public interest by the Food Security Department as few samples of the product failed laboratory tests. An order pronouncing the ban and seeking immediate withdrawal of the product from market places has also been formally issued.
