NAGERCOIL: Family members of a stillborn infant refused to receive the body at the Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital (KGMCH) at Aasaripallam near here, on Monday. Shaji of Arumanai was a daily wage labourer and was married to Viji (28) a year ago, sources said. On Sunday, Viji went into labour and was taken to the Primary Health Centre at Melpuram. After examining Viji, doctors said that there were certain complications and asked her relatives to take her to KGMCH at Aasaripallam. They said that the baby could be taken out only through caesarean. On Sunday morning Viji’s relatives admitted her at KGMCH and informed the doctors there about Viji’s pregnancy complications as told by the Melpuram PHC doctors. But the doctors at KGMCH told VIji’s relatives that the baby was in a good condition and that there was no need for a cesarean section.Viji’s condition, however, became critical during night hours and the doctors at KGMCH finally had to conduct a cesarean on Viji only to deliver a stillborn child. On knowing this, Viji’s relatives complained that the lethargic attitude of the doctors was the reason for the death of the infant, alleging that if they would have done the cesarean in the right time, the baby could have been saved. They, then, refused to receive the dead body and staged a demonstration. The hospital authorities held talks with Viji’s relatives, but they stood firm in their stand. Meanwhile, the Collector held talks with the relatives and ordered a postmortem. Now, the infant’s body is being kept at KGMCH mortuary.
