Lucknow: A nine-year-old girl died on Thursday after being mauled by dogs in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh, despite the precautionary drone-night vision measures taken by the administration to check the menace. The death toll has now reached 14 since May 1.
The girl, who has been identified as Sonam, was a resident of Khairampur. The incident took place when the victim, who was accompanied by a friend, was attacked on the neck by feral dogs after failing to climb up a tree to save herself. She was rushed to a district hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Last week, CM Yogi Adityanath had instructed his administration to keep a tab on stray dogs. The CM visited the families of the deceased children and announced ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh for the victims' kin.
So far 35 stray dogs have been caught and many more sterilised and freed into jungles by the administration.
Enraged residents of Sitapur have now started hunting down canines on their own. Few days ago, when a 10-year-old was attacked, the infuriated villagers killed two stray dogs, the bodies of which have now been sent to Bareilly by Indian Veterinary Research Institute team for investigation.
