VISAKHAPATNAM: To their neighbours and relatives, Yeshwant Sandeep, Mohamoud Rafie and K Sarat Chandra were happy-go-lucky students.Sandeep was a third-year student of engineering at ANITS College; Sarat Chandra was in the final year of his BBM at a corporate college, and Rafie in the final year of his BA from Andhra Universtity. Little did they know that they were also members of a gang that carried out a spree of 38 robberies in Vizag and Rajahmundry and had hoarded stolen jewellery worth some Rs 55 lakh and a mind-boggling assortment of mobile phones, laptops and other electronic gadgets. Their luck ran out when the cops tracked them and two of their accomplices -- kingpin B Nagasai and Pilla Saikumar -- on Friday. Sandeep, of Kancharapalem area of Vizag, Rafie of Maddilapalam, and K Sarat Chandra were roped into the gang by one Nagasai. Vizag police commissioner J Purnachander Rao said they found gold worth Rs 30 lakh, silver worth Rs 24 lakh, electronic goods worth Rs 1 lakh in the gang’s possession.They had spent around Rs 5 lakh of stolen money. Nagasai would conduct morning-time recces of Vizag localities to identify locked houses and the other four moved in for the kill. The five-man gang is to be produced in court on Sunday.
