CHENNAI: Fourth year students of mechanical engineering from Prince Shri Venkateshwara Padmavathy Engineering College, Ponmar, Vishnu Priya, Aristo Mathivanan, R Manikandan and M Poorna Chandran in a constructive eco-friendly initiative, have built a zero-pollution vehicle. It is a two-seater car that looks a bit like the one used by James Bond, with gadgets attached all over. Dubbed the Dual Green Car, the vehicle uses a dual energy function, pneumatic and electric energy. With the price of fossil fuels going up day by day, this eco-friendly car provides the ultimate solution at an affordable price, team leader Vishnu Priya emphatically claims. Other green cars have a battery, controller, electric-hub motor and an electric throttle. While these are normal e-car components, this Dual Green car has a compressed air tank, FRL (fitter, regulator, lubricator) unit, air motor and generator. When the battery charge is released, electric energy is given to the controller which controls the current from battery to hub-motor. A throttle is connected to the accelerator. When the accelerator is pressed, electric signals are given to the controller which controls the speed of the electric hub motor. This innovation uses a ‘pneumatic’ source, which is ‘compressed air ‘.The dual function of pneumatic and electric energy gives it the name Dual Green Car. In the future, the innovators intend to attach solar panels and an on-board compressor, in order to increase efficiency. If such a prototype is made, no external input energy need be given manually. The four student innovators spent `1,25,000, to construct the green car and it just needs 30-45 minutes for power charging. The battery will act as a buffer. This draws the distinguishing line between this car and other e-cars that need at least eight hours for re-charging and are heftily priced at `4.5 lakh. Power charging for them has to be done indoors, with the car in stationary mode. But the dual green car can be charged while driving.
