CHENNAI: Residents of Rajeshwari Nagar, neighbours to the uncle-nephew duo arrested and flown to Delhi for alleged links with the Indian Mujahideen, have expressed surprise over the arrests in their backyard. The residents claimed that the students living in the first floor of the two-storey six-house apartment kept to themselves. “They would never talk to any of us. The only time we saw them was when they went to college in the morning and for prayers regularly before noon. We still cannot believe what we are hearing about them,” said a resident of Vidhyalakshmi Street, one of the three streets in the quiet residential area. They claimed they were taken by surprise when all of a sudden a large team of policemen arrived at the house on Sunday. “It was 4 in the morning when I heard the noise of vans driving in. I came out and found that it was the police. I asked one of the policemen and he said they were taking the students for questioning only on suspicion. But today, TV news claimed that they had terror links. Had we known a week before, we would have kept a watch on them,” said a woman of Varalakshmi Street. “We have never seen any suspicious activity or many outsiders going into the house. They just kept to themselves. We do not even know when they came to this house,” another resident of Varalakshmi Street said. Meanwhile, a Selaiyur resident directed this reporter to a local jewellery shop owner on Camp Road claiming that he was the landlord of the apartment. However, the shop owner denied it and said that the owner of the house lived in T Nagar.
