Plaster Of Paris (POP) is a building material which is used to build the interior of a house such as internal walls and false ceilings. It is also used to mould decorative casts. It is one of the durable materials that hardens quickly, making it ideal for repairing broken objects. POP is fire-resistant and can protect blockwork, concrete and steel. The importance of ceilings with different colours helps in making the house look beautiful. POP is extensively used as a material in the ceilings to avoid the summer heat in the house. Earlier, it was imported from Rajasthan and Bihar. A man in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh is earning handsome income by manufacturing POP in the cottages set up in the district. Koyyalagudem Murali of West Godavari District is making profit by starting a POP manufacturing business.
Plaster of Paris is made with gypsum powder. This gypsum powder is extracted from thunder stones. Sheets are made from it for the ceilings of the home. It consists of 10 MM and 12 MM sheets. 5 litres of water is poured into seven kg of gypsum powder followed by mixing. This mixture is placed on a 10mm sheet in the frame. It hardens within 10 to 15 minutes. In this way, the POP sheets are made for the ceilings in the house.
The sheets are sold at a low rate in the market compared to other products of POP. A 10 MM sheet costs around Rs 100. Sheets are sold in the market at a rate of Rs 120 per foot, when it lengthens to 12 mm. Gypsum powder is imported from Piduguralla, Srikakulam at the rate of Rs 20 per kg per tonne. Each sheet is sold in the market by making a profit of Rs 5-10 per square foot. These sheets are not only used in making the ceilings of a house, cast for broken bones, chalks and other things.
