Guwahati: Three abandoned wells of Oil India Limited (OIL) were set ablaze, allegedly by agitating employees on contract, in the Digboi reserve forest of Tinsukia district of Assam on Tuesday.
The company sources said though none of the three wells had any strategic value, the Oil India authorities were shocked by the severity of the sabotage.
The agitated employees who set the wells ablaze were demanding better pay package and perks.
They had clashed with the security forces on Monday after an altercation with the company's management.
All the wells immediately caught fire causing damage to some of the OIL properties inside the jungle.
No one arrests have been made so far but the CISF have increased their presence throughout the OIL installation as they apprehend further sabotage by the contract laboureres.
