Toxic colours on Holi: 13-year-old dies in Mumbai
The state government has formed a five-member committee to probe the incident.

Mumbai: Holi celebrations took a tragic turn in Mumbai as a 13-year-old boy died from colour poisoning after Holi celebrations. More than 220 people, mostly children, from Dharavi were hospitalized after they played with spurious colours.

A majority of 210 patients were admitted to Mumbai's Sion Hospital and 12 others to Rajawadi Hospital with symptoms of giddiness and vomiting. Most of those admitted were children between three and 15 years of age. Three girls were in the ICU. Doctors fear too, that there could be long term damage that can't be assessed now.

The state government has formed a five-member committee to probe the incident and has also instructed the Maharashtra FDA to take samples of the spurious colour for toxicology analyses. Now forensic reports may take weeks to come, but some doctors told CNN-IBN that they suspect a possible Benzene poisoning, which is a chemical used in paint, leather and dye industry.

The big question remains as to how did the chemicals cause so much damage.

Dr Sandhya Kamat, Dean, Sion hospital, said, "It can cause damage with inhalation also. The body absorbs the chemical and leads to the formation of high levels of methyl hemoglobin which brings down oxygen supply to various body parts."

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said necessary action will be taken.
