Birsa Sagram Samiti, an organisation fighting for the cause of poor tribals of Purunapani area of Sundargarh district, has petitioned the State Government for operationalisation of the closed mines.
In a memorandum to the Sundargarh district collector, copies of which are sent to Prime Minister, Governor, Chief Minister, Steel and Mines Minister and elected representatives of the district, president of the samiti Bidyadhar Deb said people of Purunapani are forced to migrate to other places in search of jobs after closure of the dolomite and limestone mines in 1990. The limestone and dolomite mines of Tata company were closed in 1990. The mines of SAIL were closed in 2003. The local people of Purunapani block, who were eking out a living by working in the mines, were rendered jobless and forced to migrate in search of greener pastures.
Though palli sabhas were conducted in Purunapani and Bhajpur revenue villages in 2009 for operationalisation of Kalinga Limestone and Dolomite Mines, the Government is yet to take a decision.
The samiti has been fighting for reopening of the mines for the last 12 years. The State Government decided in 2007 to operationalise the Purunapani Limestone Mines after Centre assured to set up a two million tonne capacity slag cement factory at Purunapani. However, both the State and the Centre reneged its promise.
