TRS MLAs, 91 activists held

Some TRS MLAs and many party activists were arrested at various places in Telangana and also in Hyderabad in connection with protests and violence related to YSRCP honorary president YS Vijayamma’s dharna at Sircilla in Karimnagar district on Monday.

Ninety-one TRS activists were arrested for causing trouble at Vijayamma’s deeksha, DGP V Dinesh Reddy has said, adding he had ordered a probe against Medak police for firing tear gas shells on protestors. Nizamabad DIG will conduct the inquiry.

Meanwhile, director general (law and order) S A Huda said police suggested an alternative route for the convoy avoiding Siddipet and other trouble-prone spots, but the YSRCP leaders insisted on the scheduled route via Siddipet.

Additional forces were drawn from Mahbubnagar, Khammam, Nalgonda and Adilabad districts to prevent any un-toward incidents. At least 29 TRS activists at the Kakatiya university were taken into preventive custody in Warangal.

In Madak, 60 activists, including MLA Harish Rao were taken into custody. Legislators K Taraka Rama Rao and Gampa Govardhan were also held. The convoy was obstructed at Siddipet where police had to use tear gas shells to keep the stone-throwing mob away.

Meanwhile, some other TRS MLAs were arrested when they tried to stop the convoy of chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at the main gate of the Secretariat. They earlier met the chief minister and lodged their protest against the police highhandedness. They demanded an inquiry into the ‘police attack’ on Telangana Bhavan.
