New Delhi: A group of journalists today marched to the residence of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to protest against the brutal murder of a freelance journalist in Shahjahanpur.

Jagender Singh was allegedly set on fire by policemen on June 1 during a raid at his house at Vikas Colony in Sadar Bazar, Shahjahanpur. He died during treatment at a hospital in Lucknow on June 8.

The protesting journalists marched to Yadav's home after holding a meeting at Press Club of India (PCI), a statement said. In the protest meeting, the journalists condemned the "dastardly killing" of Singh and called for "immediate dismissal and arrest of the culprits including the minister against whom allegations have been leveled".

Uttar Pradesh minister Ram Murti Verma and five others have been booked in connection with the case under sections 302 (murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

The FIR was registered at Puwayan police station of Shahjahanpur by the victim's son Raghvendra after his father died during treatment at a hospital here on June 8. Before his death, Jagendra had accused Verma of "unleashing" a reign of terror on him and his family for his investigative reports and comments on Facebook against the minister.
