PUDUCHERRY: It is a wrong policy to appoint nominated MLAs before conducting the election of the Speaker of the Territorial Assembly, said former chief minister V Vaithilingam. Speaking to the media after calling on Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Iqbal Singh on Monday, he came out in tune with the AIADMK against the move made by Chief Minister N Rangasamy, to appoint three nominated MLAs to strengthen his party and establish majority. However, he did not give a direct reply whether the opposition would be fielding a candidate for election as Speaker. Only after the process for election of Speaker is initiated and date announced would a decision be taken, he said. On his part, Vaithilingam has already donned the role of an active opposition MLA. Havng met the L-G, he said that as an opposition MLA he had met the L-G regarding certain deficiencies in administration. Some of the projects initiated by him at Krishna Nagar and Rainbow Nagar during his tenure as Chief Minister have still not been completed. Though the work was stopped during the election, even after its withdrawal, the work is yet to be resumed. When quizzed for not taking up the issue with the Chief Minister, he said that the reasons for delay it could be administrative as well as political . It was only natural that opposition MLAs represented to him as the first citizen. The Congress party is yet to elect its leader, who would become the leader of the Opposition. “The decision would be announced by Sonia Gandhi. However, she is out of station,” he said.
