VILLUPURAM: A Village Administrative Officer Office constructed at Kuladeepamangalam village near Thirukovilur in 2003 has not been inaugurated. Locals said that since the office building was situated near an area populated by the Schedule Caste community, no one had come forward to make it functional. The building for the VAO office was commissioned in this area as there was not enough space elsewhere at the village.Caste Hindus, reportedly, were not willing to go to this area to get their work done. As a result, the VAO office is now functioning from a portion of the panchayat office obviating the need for a separate building. It may be noted that four years ago the village witnessed a conflict between SC and other community people over Dalits entering a temple here. Many people were injured in the clash and a case is pending in court.C Arjunan, a resident of this village, said that no one had taken steps to inaugurate the building and no one cared, as the building was situated near an SC community. Caste Hindus hesitate to come here for their work. The building had been ruined due to absence of maintenance.V Saravanan from this village said that this was a true example of caste problem in the area. He said that only due to the building’s location, it had become unapproachable to some people. Officials should take steps to inaugurate this building, he added. At present, the abandoned building, situated on the side of Thirukovilur-Manalurpet main road, has been over run by foliage and is in desperate need of repair.
