THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The admissions to Dr Somerwell Memorial Medical College, Karakkonam, has come under scanner following allegation of collection of capitation fees ranging up to Rs 50 lakh for admission to management quota seats in the college. Various organisations have come out against the allegation of collection of capitation fees. This is even before the entrance examinations for admissions to the management quota in the college is held. The admissions become controversial after a private television channel telecast an investigative report on the allegation that the college had admitted students to all the 50 management quota seats after collecting hefty fees. Interestingly, the college is one of the 11 colleges under the Kerala Medical College Managements Association which had agreed for seat sharing in 50:50 ratio for government and management quota seats. Sajan Prasad, a representative of the college, is the secretary of the Association. BJP state president V Muralidharan told reporters here that legal measures should be initiated before influential people destroy the evidence. SFI state secretariat demanded an inquiry into the entrance procedures adopted by self-financing medical colleges. They also demanded a Vigilance inquiry into the allegation of cash transactions in admissions to self-financing medical colleges. Bharatheeya Janata Yuva Morcha state president V V Rajesh in a statement urged the Medical Council of India to cancel the affiliation of the Karakkonam medical college.
