A fierce gun battle was exchanged between a West Bengal police officer and at least seven masked robbers — armed with pistols, a machine gun, and a rifle — during a foiled robbery attempt at a jewellery shop in Raniganj on Sunday.

According to the Bengal police, approximately 20 rounds were exchanged during the confrontation before the robbers fled, abandoning half of their loot. The robbers seized ornaments valued at over Rs 4 crore during the heist.

CCTV footage from the incident shows sub-inspector Meghnad Mondal, dressed in civilian attire, engaging the robbers with his service revolver from behind an electric pole.

According to a report by Kolkata-based daily, The Statesman, around noon on Sunday, a group of seven to eight armed robbers, aged between 22 and 25 years, stormed the jewelry showroom. They seized the carbines of private security guards and looted ornaments from the store within fifteen minutes.

The publication further reported that the police suspect the armed men to be gang members from Jharkhand. One of the individuals is believed to have been injured in the exchange of fire with the police.

In an update provided by West Bengal police on X, it was stated that four of the robbers hijacked a car after shooting the driver in the Asansol-Dakshin Thana area.

“Four of the seven hijacked a car after shooting the driver in Asansol-Dakshin Thana area. A pedestrian was also slightly injured in the shooting, but it did not help much either. With the help of the Jharkhand police, the car was seized quickly,” the West Bengal shared on Tuesday.

“Suraj Singh, a resident of Gopalganj area of ​​Giridi district, was arrested at the same time. Sonu Singh, who was injured in the shooting, was arrested in Bihar’s Siwan area yesterday, who is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital in Dhanbad. Based on the statements of the two accused, the rest of the gang will come up in our net very soon. No one will be left out,” the police added.
