New Delhi: Star boxer Vijender Singh urged the central government to step in and resolve the ongoing crisis in Indian boxing for betterment of the sport, here. "The country's boxing federation has been suspended by the International body. I would request our government to step forward and resolve the issue", Vijender said.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medallist also believed that unless the country's sporting authorities do not maintain a clean image in the global sporting arena, it would be very difficult for the athletes to do well in the upcoming events like Commonwealth Games and Asiad, slated to take place later this year.

"Yes, we will participate in the Commonwealth and Asian Games. But We won't be able to represent India. Even if the athletes win medals, it will not be counted under India's tally," he said at an event organised by People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), India.

Earlier, International Boxing Association (AIBA) has terminated the Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) from its fold stating that the current set of office-bearers are "damaging the image, reputation and interest" of the sport. The boxers and coaches will, however, continue to remain unaffected by the development and can participate in international events under the AIBA flag till the time the crisis is sorted out.

Vijender rued India's failure to capitalise on the hype that was created after a string of success in the ring post the 2008 Games. "It was due to some drawbacks at certain quarters like sponsors and administration, we have lost a great opportunity to take boxing to another level," he said.

Vijender also sent out a message to the people of the country for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. "You have the power of choosing your representatives through your vote. Please use that so that you don't have to lament later. You have the time, choose the right candidate based upon his/her work," Vijender said.

He rejected the possibility of entering politics right now.
