There has been a lot of hype around the recent releases which set the curiosity meter up and a thumps up to the cash registers. As hype has it, the latest release Vinnaitandi Varuvaya stars Trisha and Simbu. The director of the film is on the A list, Simbu is doing his first subtle role, on and off mentions in the news and the excellent next gen, soothing to the ears music by A.R. Rahman.
The movie is a narration by the male lead. It starts off with the male lead Karthik (Simbu) and his family moving into their rented space with the landlords staying right above their floor. The land lord (Babu Anthony - yesteryear action hero of Malayalam films) and his family consisting of the female lead Jessie (Trisha).
Jessie is a Syrian Christian and a Malayalee. She works as a program analyst while Karthik is a Hindu and speaks only in Tamil. He is pursuing filmmaking after dropping out from mechanical engineering.
The families have it all good and easily strike a cord with each other. But fate has more in store. Karthik falls flat for Jessie right from the first sight. This is followed by the frolics everyone does at that age that includes trying to catch a glance of Jessie without being noticed, trying to impress her, staging uncanny meetings. This eventually pays off when she finally notices Karthik and develops a friendly approach. But all is foiled when Karthik expresses his love for Jessie. She suddenly disappears and later is located in Alleppey, Kerala. Jessie is on an unsupervised visit to her grandma’s.
On understanding Jessie's whereabouts Karthik sets off with his cameraman friend to meet her. After a long trail he finally finds her in a church in Alleppey. She is shocked and surprised to find Karthik there. He explains the motive of his journey was to apologise for his brash behaviour. Then sets off a series of incidents which makes Jessie rethink about Karthik. They head back to Chennai together and find themselves falling more in love with each other.
Back in Chennai they start seeing each other and spend more time together. Jessie is still apprehensive about going to the next level. Karthik has his prerogatives set for the relationship i.e. he wants to take a leap from friendship to love. She however wants to take it slow.
The blow comes in with the entry of Jessie’s brother who challenges Karthik to a brawl. Karthik an ardent boxer blows fists on Jessie’s brother and his thug friends. This sets things to go awfully wrong for the couple.
Then starts off the serious side of the movie with all opposition from Jessie’s family. To find out if the couple finally overcomes all hurdles and unite or succumb to the pressures and fall apart. Watch the movie to know more.
The production value is excellent, the camera work is excellent. Each frame looks rich in colour. The locales are carefully selected to match the mood and the frame. Trisha looks stunningly beautiful though simple. Simbu is brash as usual but manages to capture your attention. Music and background score are good, however, it doesn’t stand out.
The disconnect in the film happens towards the end with the story. Also a love story has to build on you; however, here you can never totally connect with the characters and their intensity. There is no emotional impact to approve the lovers and the love story. There are quite a lot of tweaks in the script. But the movie feels very abrupt.
So in the end Vinnaitandi Varuvaya has its moments but fails to strike a chord.
