THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has come out against the proposal in the Supreme Court empowered panel report on Mullaperiyar for laying a new tunnel and sought an explanation whether the stand of  Justice K T Thomas, Kerala’s representative, had the approval of the State Government. Addressing a news conference here on Monday, Achuthanandan blamed the State Government for surrendering the upper hand gained in the Mullaperiyar issue by adopting a lackadaisical approach, while the Centre yielded to the pressure mounted by Tamil Nadu, resulting in an unfavourable report for Kerala from the Supreme Court panel.“It seems that there was no proper communication between the government and Justice K T Thomas,’’ he said and observed that the proposed tunnel was a matter of great concern for the state. That there is no link between the water level and the safety of the dam and such conclusions in the panel report are highly detrimental to the state, the Opposition leader said. He further criticised that the divide in the UDF among coalition partners and also between the ministers had created a scenario that there was no collectivity while addressing a burning issue like Mullaperiyar. ‘’While P J Joseph is pitted against the panel report, a couple of other ministers and the KPCC president have a different view. What stance K M Mani is following now? The Chief Minister should also make his stand clear,’’ Achuthanandan said.“The approach has affected the state’s interests,’’ he felt.
