Warning against alarming rise in self-treatment

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: “Malayalis’ unnecessary dependence on medicines is on the rise. More and more educated people are trying self-treatment due to the easy availability of drugs without prescription,” said K C Ajith Kumar, president of the Kerala State Pharmacy Council, in the city on Tuesday. He was addressing a press conference organised in connection with the MNVG Adiyodi Memorial National Pharmaceutical Scientific Seminar, which begins at AJ Hall on Thursday.   “There is an alarming rise in the use of allopathic medicines. The per capita consumption is ten times higher than the national average. Meanwhile, most of the sales are not based on doctors’ prescriptions,” he said. Ajith Kumar also said there were many flaws in the storage of drugs.
