Ooty is one of the top tourist destinations in the country, popular for its scenic beauty and climate. Each year, the place sees a plethora of visitors from across the country, who visit the place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life. As per Local18, lakhs of tourists visit Ooty every year, which is located in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. They have several options to visit, which include shops and parks. According to Local18, the tourists who want to buy clothes like sweaters, shawls and jerkins, the place to be is the Tibetan Market. One can find any type of woollen cloth at the market, reports Local18.
According to the Tibetan people who own shops in the place, they have been doing business here for the last 4 decades. Initially, they carried out their business in bazaars but now the district administration has permitted them to set up their shops, more reports state.
Local18 states further that the owners have since then set up shops in 63 outdoor and indoor areas. They keep switching the shops on a rotational basis. Furthermore, the Tibetans have learned to speak the local language to an extent, which makes it easier for them to do business.
The clothes are sold in the range of Rs 280 to Rs 1,600, considered to be a preference of most tourists. During the winter season, the men of the family leave their homes to do business in other places while the women take care of the sales at home.
Talking to Local18, the owners revealed that after the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a decline in number of tourists, which has affected the business. However, it flourishes during the summer season and, decreases during the rains and winters.
