Suri (West Bengal): A pigeon with a miniature plastic skull dangling around its neck and with glowing red bulbs in the eye sockets is in the custody of the police.
The Police nabbed the ghostly bird after panic about an uproar about a ghost been attacking people and leaving scratch marks in five villages in West Bengal's Birbhum district.
Suri DSP, D&T, Amitabha Maity had displayed the bird. A battery-powered miniature circuit lighted the red bulbs in the bird’s eye sockets.
Maity said, "It may be one instance how birds and animals can be used to create panic."
When asked about the motive behind frightening people, the DSP
said, "the only motive appears to be to create panic."
He, however, could not explain how people suffered scratches in the attacks.
A person from Kalipur village had been admitted to Suri hospital, three weeks ago after being attacked and scratched. Angry people of Dubrajpur had set up a road-block two weeks ago after a boy had scratch marks.
Hundreds of people thronged the Suri police station on Friday for a glimpse of the 'ghost' after the pigeon was caught from Kaita village in Dubrajpur.
A villager had informed the police which led the bird to be taken into custody.
After receiving reports about the attacks for nearly a month from various villages, the police had increased night patrols and had also formed a special team to get to the bottom of the mystery.
Village Pradhans had also been told to keep watch, the police said. The police had also approached the Forest department to lay traps.
The police briefed the Chief Conservator of Forerts, Rahul Sinha, during his visit to the village on Friday.
So great was the fear of the ghostly bird that a full-grown owl was recently killed by the frightened villagers at Dubrajpur after it alighted on a house.
The police added that people had described the ghost variously as a man and a monkey.
