Karwar, a coastal city in Uttara Kannada, is well-known for dry fish. The dry fish available in this region is known to be of extremely good quality and their prices are low as well. Besides Karwar, there is a huge demand for dry fish in other districts and states as well. These states include Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Goa.

Traditionally, the people living in Goa procure the dried fish in May and they savour this food at Purumentachem Fest. Nearly 70 percent of the buyers were from Goa. The market in Karwar offers a wide variety of fish at the most affordable prices in comparison to the markets present in Goa. Vendors in the market also offer guidance to consumers on cooking methods to enhance the dried fish’s flavour. The vendors cater to consumers with a lot of food preferences and varied budgets. Initially, only the people from Canacona, Goa used to visit Karwar to purchase the dried fish. Now, visitors from Quepem and Margao also visit this city in Karnataka to buy dried fish.
