Popular writer and director Mahmood Farooqui has been arrested by Delhi Police on rape charges. Farooqui has been accused of raping a foreign national in March.
An FIR with regard to the alleged incident was lodged earlier this week. The writer-director has been sent to judicial custody.
Farooqui is married to director and screenwriter Anusha Rizvi, who directed the 2010 satirical comedy film Peepli Live. A big name in social and literary circles, Farooqui was the writer and co-director of the film produced by Aamir Khan.
Farooqui is known for promoting the ancient Urdu storytelling art of Dastangoi, and has also been the main researcher of William Darlymple's books City of Djinns and White Mughals
