PUDUCHERRY : Trade unions in the UT have called for a bandh on February 2 to protest the death of union leader M S Murali Mohan and the injuries caused to nine persons in police action during the violence which broke out in Yanam region on January 27.According to a resolution adopted during a meeting of the union representatives at the AITUC office on Saturday, the bandh would be observed in all the four regions including Puducherry and Karaikal, from 6 am to 6 pm on February 2.The meet, which saw the participation of representatives of various unions including AITUC, CITU, LPF and the MDMK’s MLF also decided to urge the government to sanction a solatium of Rs 25 lakh to the family of Murali Mohan, who, according to them, was killed in police custody. The trade unions have also urged the government to release an amount of Rs 10 lakh as compensation for the nine workers injured in the incident.Further, they demanded that the police officials responsible for the incident be immediately placed under suspension and arrested.According to a TU leader who was present at Saturday’s meeting, the trade unions would undertake a campaign on January 30 and 31 to garner public support for the bandh.On February 1, they would also stage a rally from the old bus stand to the Assembly building, he added.
