The untimely demise of popular actor Lee Sun Kyun, confirmed on December 27, has sent ripples of grief through the South Korean entertainment industry. The actor was found unconscious in his car and later pronounced dead, according to the official statement from his agency. This sudden and unexpected loss has prompted an outpouring of condolences from various corners, as fellow celebrities took to social media to pay their respects and reflect on the profound impact Lee Sun Kyun had on Korean entertainment.
Actress and model Kim Soo Hyun, also known by her stage name Claudia Kim, conveyed her condolences through a heartfelt Instagram post. She mourned the passing of Lee Sun Kyun as a significant blow to Korean entertainment, marking it as a grievous loss.
The Gyeongseong Creature actress put up an Instagram story that said, “So shocked and heartbroken to hear the news. Everyone deserves to be forgiven for their mistakes. Everyone deserves a second chance. What a loss of great talent it is for the Korean entertainment industry. Sending prayers to his family and close friends. Read in Peace”
Yuri, the venerable singer from the iconic first-generation K-Pop group Cool, echoed the sentiments of sorrow. “Rest in peace, Lee Sun Kyun. I am so sad… This makes me even more afraid of people. He was human, just like us… Should his mistake cost him his life? This is heartbreaking and tragic. I am sending prayers to his family,” she wrote in her Instagram story.
Actor Lee Ji Hoon, in a post that has since been deleted, expressed regret and shock at Lee Sun Kyun’s passing. The actor pointedly asked whether it was justifiable for others to pass judgment without firsthand experience, urging self-reflection on the part of those who critique others. The post, initially visible, has now been replaced by a simple black image.
The now-deleted post read, “I am shocked and afraid. Is it fair for someone to judge when they themselves had never experienced (what he was going through)?. To those who judge others, can you look at yourself in the mirror and not be embarrassed about your own life?” reports Koreaboo.
Late Lee Sun Kyun, known as one of Korea’s most prolific actors, faced controversy in 2023 related to a drug abuse investigation. This led to his withdrawal from an ongoing drama production, with the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency charging him with suspicion of using marijuana and psychoactive drugs.
Lee Sun Kyun is survived by his wife, actress Jeon Hye-jin, and their two sons.
