South Korean actor Song Kang has been confirmed as a storyteller on Mnet’s upcoming show I-LAND2: N/a. Mnet stated on March 11 that the actor will be a part of the show, which will begin airing next month on the 18th. The upcoming season of the famous reality show will feature a hunt for girl groups.
The next second season of Mnet’s survival show will be produced in association with YG Entertainment producer Teddy and his agency THEBLACKLABEL. Teddy’s involvement heralds the emergence of a new girl group that will drive a new trend in the global music scene. Teddy has provided backing to hit songs for internationally successful girl groups including BLACKPINK, Jeon SoMi and 2NE1.
The first season was created in partnership with HYBE which gave prominence to the boy group ENHYPEN in 2020.
On March 11, I-LAND2 published a teaser promoting Mnet and THEBLACKLABEL’s future partnership, as well as confirming Song Kang’s role as the show’s Storyteller.
Song Kang, who catapulted to worldwide fame with his loved performances in Nevertheless and My Demon, is making I-LAND2 one of the most anticipated projects just by joining. The actor was quoted by Soompi stating, “I’m happy to be a part of the start of the journey in which a new artist is born as the Storyteller of ‘I-LAND.’ I will do my best to deliver a new story to viewers."
This will be the actor’s final project before his mandatory service in the South Korean military.
While all the excitement has been going on, I-LAND 2 has been dealing with severe allegations of abuse on the set. A social media post dated March 10 claimed that the production staff had acted inappropriately against underage participants. The director lined up the candidates, who had only received around two hours of sleep, and chastised them for displaying “zero passion" in the early morning shoot, despite warnings not to abuse participants being plainly written on the walls, as revealed by anonymous whistleblower A.
The I-LAND 2 production team responded to these allegations by saying that they prioritise the young cast members’ health and safety while also working to establish a safe and appropriate filming environment and a popular programme, according to the report by Zapzee. They also made sure to follow all applicable laws.
They further stated that the I-LAND 2 set has procedures in place to ensure safety and is under constant monitoring. The producers went on to clarify that they use an automated ventilation system to assess air quality and a central control system to automatically manage temperatures.
