The production team of the K-Drama, Queen of Tears, has refuted online rumours regarding actor Kim Soo-hyun’s purportedly extravagant appearance fee. Recent reports alleging that Kim Soo-hyun would receive ₩800 million KRW (approximately Rs 5 crore) per episode for his role in the series sparked controversy among fans and the media. However, the production team clarified on March 26, KST, that these reports were false. According to Koreaboo, the initial rumours originated from a report by the Korean news outlet Newsen, which claimed that multiple production company representatives had confirmed Kim Soo-hyun’s high fee.
According to their report, the actor’s fee for the 16-episode drama would amount to ₩12.8 billion KRW (approx. Rs 80 crore), a figure that raised eyebrows given the show’s total budget of ₩40.0 billion KRW (approx. Rs 250 crore) and Kim Soo-hyun’s fee alone would have cost the production team almost a third of the total budget.
Despite the seemingly steep figure, actor Kim Soo-hyun’s reported fee for Queen of Tears was not unexpected. In his previous drama, One Ordinary Day, he was said to have been paid ₩500 million KRW (approx Rs 3 crore) per episode, totalling ₩3.00 billion KRW (approx. Rs 18 crore) for the entire series.
However, the reports of his exorbitant fee in The Queen of Tears have now been dismissed by its production team. They have disclosed to MyDaily that the reports of Kim Soo-hyun’s fee had created unwarranted pressure for both the show and the actor. While they did not disclose the actual amount, they hinted at the industry standard in Korea, which typically sees a 1.2 to 1.3 times increase in an actor’s fee following a successful project, informs Koreaboo.
The drama, Queen of Tears, written by Park Ji Eun and co-directed by Jang Young Woo and Kim Hee Won, stars Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji Won in lead roles. The series explores the complex relationship between married couple Hong Hae In (Kim Ji Won) and Baek Hyun Woo (Kim Soo-hyun). The series deals with the themes of love, family crisis and reconciliation amidst societal pressures.
Actor Kim Soo-hyun has been receiving much accolades and love for his portrayal of Baek Hyun Woo, a lawyer navigating the challenges of his rural background in a world of chaebols (large industrial South Korean conglomerate or company usually run and controlled by an individual or family) in the ongoing drama.
