Dr Ishu Goyal, Associate Consultant Neurologist, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital explains how stroke in physically active people is a cause of concern. Stroke was traditionally considered to be a disease of elderly with multiple risk factors like hypertension, diabetes and other systemic diseases. “Gradually a shift of paradigm was observed with more and more stroke cases being recognized in younger age groups. This particular section was noted to have increased incidence of above mentioned risk factors along with excessive work related stress, smoking, improper sleep patterns and low levels of physical activities,” adds Dr Goyal.
Hence, the importance of more and more physical exercises was emphasized upon. “But it is important to note that just increase in time devoted to work-outs is far from sufficient for avoidance of calamities like stroke. The key is to keep all the risk factors of stroke under check. A few factors to ensure this are, to keep a constant check on blood pressure, sugar levels, cholesterol levels, BMI, adequate nutritional replenishment, healthy diet, avoidance of smoking and limited alcohol consumption,” opines Dr Goyal.
Apart from this maintaining sleep hygiene is of paramount importance and it has been documented in various studies that sleep related disorders predispose a patient to a multitude of neurological and non-neurological disorders. Additionally, if a person indulges in high intensity cardiac work-outs, a constant vigilance of heart’s stress dealing capacity should be done. To summarize, a work- rest balance should be maintained, along with a wholesome healthy lifestyle.
