Rakesh Bedi’s wife Aradhana, was a victim of a cyber fraud and lost roughly Rs 4.98 lakh. The incident occurred on Friday and involved an anonymous caller who falsely stated that money had been accidentally sent to her account.
According to reports, the caller tried to trick Aradhana into revealing her OTP (one-time password) to reportedly fix the mistake. Despite her suspicions and unwillingness to give the OTP, funds were illegally removed from her account.
The fraud began when the caller informed Aradhana that Rs 4.98 lakh had been inadvertently credited to her account and that she would receive an OTP to assist reverse the transaction. Aradhana hung up the phone because she suspected fraud.
However, when she checked her bank account later, she realised that the specified amount had been siphoned off.
The case is now being investigated by the Oshiwara police, headed by officer Mohan Patil. Even though Aradhana did not provide her OTP, the cash was nevertheless taken, indicating a sophisticated form of cybercrime.
The police are puzzled by how the transaction was accomplished without collecting the essential authentication data, such as an OTP, remote access or any other secure connection.
This distinctive method of operation, in which the fraudster managed to transfer funds without acquiring any direct data, has alarmed the authorities. The Oshiwara police’s cyber wing is currently working to trace the money trails to all banks where the stolen funds might have been credited.
However, earlier, Rakesh Bedi himself was a victim of a similar scam. He had informed me that 75 thousand rupees were withdrawn from his account on January 2, 2024.
The actor reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be an army officer interested in investing in his Pune flat. Subsequently, Rs 75,000 were fraudulently withdrawn from his account. The actor complained to the Oshiwara police station. Later, a similar incident occurred involving his wife. The case has garnered widespread attention.
