Director Imtiaz Ali, known for his unique style, has had both hits and flops. In a recent chat with Mid Day, he discussed Love Aaj Kal 2, which starred Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan. Imtiaz addressed Sara’s criticism of her performance and explained the issues with the film. Imtiaz Ali said the young actors in Love Aaj Kal 2 didn’t fully understand his vision. He said that his English teacher looked at it as students saying they understood a lesson, even when they didn’t.
He said, “There was something very sensitive in Love Aaj Kal 2. My English teacher told me the film reminded her of her English classes when she would ask young students if they understood what she was saying and they said yes, even if they didn’t. She said the youngsters in the film didn’t get what you were trying to say. I am not blaming Sara and Kartik. Direction is a process of working with an actor, but he or she is not obliged to understand because they have surrendered.”
Imtiaz added, “I did not get it that I had to explain to them in different ways to get them to that point where they could own that material. The script could not communicate to me or the actors perhaps. At all points, I am engaged with a certain challenge and I am only worried about that, at that point. I don’t feel I am in a rough patch, although some of my films have not done that well.”
Imtiaz Ali’s Netflix film Amar Singh Chamkila received rave reviews. It was honoured as The Breakout Film of the Year at the 15th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), and the director is hopeful the film will continue its success at other prestigious events, including the National Awards. The biopic, which delves into the life of the legendary Punjabi singer often referred to as the “Elvis Presley of Punjab,” was released directly on Netflix on April 12, 2024, marking Ali’s first feature film debut on a streaming platform
