‘Kalyana Vaibhoghame’ is a predictable romantic comedy. There’s nothing in the film that takes a radiant deviation from what you see in the trailer; having said that ‘KV’ sticks to its guns and provides ample entertainment for two and a half hours.
For Naga Shaurya, this isn’t a genre he hasn’t danced in. His first blockbuster, ‘Oohalu Gusagusalade’, travelled in a similar path. Even for Nandini Reddy, the director of ‘KV’, this isn’t entirely new.
‘KV’ is a story about a man and a woman who are in a marriage of convenience. Shaurya’s parents (Aishwarya and Raj Madiraju) force him to get married and the same happens to Malavika with her parents pushing her to get married (Raasi and Anand). While Raasi plays a meek housewife, Anand plays a one-sided father with a sharp nose and a pea-sized brain. He doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. He decides what his daughter has to do. One look at his wife is enough to stop her from dancing at her daughter’s wedding (because decent people don’t dance and have fun!).
The two leads complement each other with their idiosyncrasies. The narrative goes on in a clear manner suggesting that the two would eventually fall in love but what holds the tale of ‘KV’ together is the brilliance of the actors. The situations or the dialogues haven’t fallen down from the skies. They are from the local supermarket called “life". We’ve met the characters from the film at least once in our lifetime.
Shaurya (also called Shaurya in the movie) and Divyaa (Malavika) make a good on-screen couple. Though, Malavika gets to do none of the crazy things she did in ‘Yevade Subramanyam’, she knows her part well here. The bit where she creates confusion at a restaurant while Shaurya is having dinner with his date is hilarious and similarly the hero makes full use of his accented Telugu in a scene with his mother-in-law.
How funny and scary is it going to be if you found your mom at the same pub as you are in? Shaurya is chilling at a pub with his friends and his mom walks in saying home food is better than what is served at such places. Of course, all of them freak out instantly like they have spotted a ghost in an old, 18th century bungalow. Moments like these are scattered throughout the movie and there’s no reason to complain as it guarantees entertainment in fourth gear. But the same can’t be said about the climax where it goes on and on which makes it seem like it’s longer than necessary. The story ends when Divyaa and Shaurya have realized what they truly want but Nandini drags it further to bring in some extra characters for a few laughs more.
‘Kalyana Vaibhoghame’ is a comedy with romance as the label. It makes us laugh out loud and also smile at the romantic immersions.
