Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, who was previously known as Sunita Munjal before their marriage, recently reflected on the early days of their relationship. Sunita, the sister of Govinda’s maternal uncle Anand Singh’s wife, first met the actor while she was still in school and he was in college. It was Anand Singh, a director, who introduced Govinda to the film industry with his debut in Tan-Badan (1986).
During a recent appearance on the Time Out with Ankit podcast, Sunita shared how she first encountered Govinda. “My sister married his maternal uncle, and I saw him for the first time at their wedding. He was in his final year of BCom and I was in Class 9. My brother-in-law told me that Govinda was from Virar, a simple man who loved his mother a lot. He also mentioned that no girl could impress him. I remember wondering what kind of boy he was that no girl could impress him. When I told my brother-in-law I could, he said it was impossible. So, I asked him what if I did, and he challenged me to prove it first,” she recalled.
Sunita further revealed that around the same time, they began working on Tan-Badan. Initially, Anand Singh offered her the role of the female lead, which she declined due to the workload, and the part was eventually given to Khushbu Sundar. Recounting a memorable moment, she said, “On the day of the Muhurat, Govinda, my brother, and I were in a car together. My brother was seated in the middle, and when I rested my hand on the headrest, I noticed Govinda’s hand there as well. I realised he was subtly touching mine. My immediate thought was to catch him right away. That’s how our affair began.” They dated for three years before eventually getting married, and the couple has now been together for 37 years. “I’ve known him for 40 years,” she added.
Sunita also fondly remembered how Govinda gifted her a Cadbury chocolate after finishing college, marking a special moment in their relationship. Initially, she admitted that she didn’t find him particularly attractive, as she was from Bandra, a more affluent area, while he was from Virar. “I used to look down on him due to my more sophisticated upbringing,” she confessed. However, when she met Govinda’s mother, who liked her immediately, things began to change. “His mother was getting old and wanted to see him married, as he was her youngest child. So, we tied the knot quickly. I got married at 18 and became a mother at 19,” Sunita shared. She further added that Govinda’s mother lived with them for 14 more years until her passing, and during that time, they never had any fights.
