Bobby Deol has broken his silence over the controversy surrounding his latest film Animal, which a section of film critics dubbed as “problematic” and “sexist”. However, Bobby remains unfazed by all the criticism and says that he doesn’t pay heed to reviews of his film. Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, has provoked heated responses online. In fact, it’s become one of the most discussed Bollywood movies on the internet this year.
In an interview with The Quint, Bobby said that he is not bothered about the reviews because they are a “waste of energy”. He also said that he doesn’t see his character Abrar as a villain at all. When asked about the marital rape scene in the film, Bobby said, “I’m not trying to promote anything. Yes, it was required. How do you showcase a character in such a short span, show what this man is capable of, what kind of person he is? All these scenes were required.”
He continued, “We are influenced by what is happening in society as filmmakers. What is written, as a story, is an influence of what is happening in society. It exists in our society. We are not promoting it. We are actors, portraying characters, entertaining people. And if that was the case, this film wouldn’t be a big hit.”
In Animal, Bobby Deol played the role of a mute Abrar and has a scene, where right after his wedding with his third wife, he forces himself on her. The scene has drawn criticism on social media. However, Bobby said that he had no inhibitions while filming the scene.
“From the time I heard my character, I knew there was so much I could do with it without even speaking a word. In fact, without speaking a word gave me some kind of energy that brought something out in me,” Bobby recently told Bollywood Bubble. “When I was performing, I had no inhibitions whatsoever,” he added.
