The Mumbai police on Sunday registered cases against 11 persons for allegedly using wrong IDs to enter the Wankhede stadium during the England vs South Africa ICC World Cup match.

According to a Hindustan Times report, those booked, include food vendors who misused their issued IDs to ferry some spectators inside the stadium. They were selling ice creams and other food times during the match.

Meghshyam Gavkar, a Mumbai police official was managing a crowd at the sector 17 staircases inside the stadium when he suspected some hawkers and questioned them. After interrogation, it was revealed that the name on the identity card and the hawker’s original name were different.

“Similarly, he found there were more than ten hawkers, and the vendor was behind the racket. To gain profit the vendor in connivance with the eleven hawkers cheated the ICC and the government by gaining illegal entry into the stadium,” the publication quoted one of the officials as saying.

The accused have been booked under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 34 (common intention), and 419 (punishment for cheating by personation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused were given 41 A CrPc notices to appear before police when required and were allowed to go, the report stated.

A senior police officer said that no arrests have been made in the matter yet but an investigation is underway.

South Africa registered a 229-run win over England as they managed to score 399 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs before bowling England out for a paltry 170-run total at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai

England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and opts to bowl first vs South Africa. England and South Africa will have redemption on their agendas as both sides will look to bounce back to winning ways after losing their previous games in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

Jos Buttler’s men will face Temba Bavuma’s side as the World Cup caravan reaches the iconic Wankhede Stadium for the first time in this edition.
